The history of Santa Claus
We all know and love Santa Claus and come December, lots of excited children prepare for the arrival of Santa Claus as busy parents shop and join in with the excitement. The history of Santa Claus is quite interesting, the American version of Santa Claus got its inspiration from the Dutch version (Sinter Klaas) which originated around the 17th Century. It was however the Author Washington Irving who first provided detailed information about the Dutch version of St Nickolas. He described how Saint Nickolas arrived on horseback, this was better known as (The night before Christmas) written by writer Clemant Clarke Moore. Clemant added magical details such as the names of the Reindeer. Illustrator Thomas Nast added further to the image of Santa Claus with his illustrations showing Santa's big round belly. He also added detail such as the North Pole, Santa's naughty and nice list and Santa's workshop. These days Santa is depicted as a legend accompanied by his Elves but originally when Santa was first discovered, he was described as an Elf. There are over time, many stories and legends and Santa has taken on quite a transformation over the many years. As time went by Children continues to be fascinated and wanted to know everything there was to know about Santa, where he lived, who he lived with. The story evolved into Santa the legend who lived at the North pole and made all the Christmas presents in his special workshop. The North Pole became every Childs dream and visions of Santa and his Elves along with the Reindeer became what we know as Santa Claus today. Santa Claus was transformed from many different stories and now in the present day is a world figure, throughout all of the countries Santa is a big man, with a white beard who makes lots of children very happy indeed on Christmas day.
