Using Organizational Skills

You are cooking dinner for yourself. The telephone rings. You answer it to find out that the call is from an executive of the company where you had just applied for a job yesterday. She wants you to note your appointment date and her phone number for further correspondence. But you don't seem to find a pen and sheet of paper anywhere near you!

You vaguely recall that you had kept the pencil on the kitchen counter while making grocery calculations. But there is no sign of it! What do you do? You simply try to memorize the information. But guessing from the way how disorganized things are around you, your thoughts must be in similar disarray and chances are that you are going to forget the crucial bit of information.

Wouldn't it have been convenient if you happened to know where to search for your pencil and more importantly, found it there? Such is the value of possessing and implementing organizational skills in daily life. With the pace at which our lives are moving at the moment, we can hardly afford to make mistakes or slow down for any reason. If we are late to locate a pencil, we might lose a job. Failing to produce a file on time might land us in trouble with our bosses. Being unable to call an ambulance on time might deprive us of a loved one.

Research has shown that an average person loses about 1 to 2 hours a day due to lack of organization. This amounts to almost 2 weeks in a year! If we could save all that time, we could be enjoying a two week holiday on the beach every year!

The principles of organizational skills are easy and most of us are well aware of them as well. The difficult part is to implement the techniques. Since most of us are used to leading laid back disorganized lives, it is initially difficult to transform our daily habits into well managed and organized actions. But when one is able to realize all the convenience of leading an organized life, all the actions can be taken spontaneously.

Organizational skills are simple. It starts with discipline. It is not enough to just have a fixed place for keeping your phonebook. You must learn to replace the phonebook in its original place after use so that you can find it next time. Making lists of things to do before setting out to do them is also another efficient way to ensure that you are organized. Maintaining records, logs and planning a schedule are equally important.

The necessity of organizational skills can never be over emphasized. To lead a quality life, we must learn to develop and implement organizational skills. If not, we shall find ourselves having to work much harder than others and we shall be left lagging behind.
